It is a shrub native to south-central and southeast China and named 'syriacus' because it had been collected from gardens in Syria. It is the national flower of South Korea and is mentioned in the South Korean national anthem. In Korea it has been grown in gardens since immemorial times and its leaves were brewed into an herbal tea and its flowers eaten. The name "rose of Sharon" first appears in Hebrew Bible, in the 'Song of Solomon': the speaker (the beloved) says "I am the rose of Sharon, a rose of the valley". The Hebrew phrase 'ḥăḇatzeleṯ hasharon' was translated as "rose of Sharon" . This white variety is known as 'Dorothy Crane'.
